Just Jazz Guitar

Wolfgang Schalk’s playing is fresh and innovative. This disc takes you by surprise from the start. Wolfgang’s compositions have a nice blend of chordal and melodic interaction. This is probably more a reflection of his playing style, but it works wonderfully. He flows seamlessly from chords to single lines, almost weaving back and forth, always there with the right chords. He is reminiscent of Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny. The disc presents eight original compositions, with the exception of a beautiful rendition of Round Midnight. The Word of Ear opens with a hauntingly beautiful intro: Midnight Prayers, part 1. The disc closes with part 2. My favorite tune on this CD is the fast groove of Eating Melodies. Schalk plays acoustic guitar on the melodic ballad Toninho. Broadway Song presents some nice creative piano/guitar interplay. Wolfgang’s playing and compositions are interesting and tasteful. His bandmates play well behind him and provide a great platform for Wolfgang to work on. Wolfgang Schalk’s disc is a breath of fresh air and well worth a listen.
