Just Jazz Guitar

Wolfgang Schalk is an up-and-coming European jazz guitarist who plays in the vein of Pat Metheny and Adam Rogers. Having played with many of the greatest jazz musicians of his time, including the late, great saxophonist Michael Brecker, Schalk is currently focused on making a name for himself as a band leader in his own right. The band that Schalk has put together for his latest album “Wanted”, is world class in every sense of the term. Bassist Dave Carpenter, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith and pianist Geoffrey Keezer give stellar performances throughout the album, which only furthers their reputations as some of the best performers alive.

Schalk composed and arranged all eight tunes for the album. His compositional style is modern in nature, but there is always a strong sense of jazz traditional found within his melodic and harmonic ideas. His use of both the electric and nylon-string guitar, something that Metheny and Rogers are known for, adds an extra dimension to the album that helps to keep the listener’s attention throughout. As well as being a strong composer and arranger Schalk delivers some
very memorable solos on “Wanted”. His improvised solos are a great mix of Wes’s octaves and blues-oriented lines with Metheny’s driving eight-note lines and modern harmonies.

If you are a fan of modern jazz guitar looking to expand your CD collection, then I suggest checking out “Wanted”, as well as any of Schalk’s other recordings. He is able to stay within the genre while adding his own personal touch to every melody and solo-something that is not easy to do. With “Wanted”, Schalk proves once again that some of the strongest and exciting voices in jazz guitar are coming from the other side of the Atlantic.
